Rapid Cardiac Echocardiography - Gold Coast

This intensive two-day program provides practitioners at the beginning of the learning curve in cardiac imaging with anatomy, physiology, haemodynamics and knowledge of sonographic planes, terminology and probe manipulation skills. There is an emphasis on the practical aspects of these topics with "hands-on" tuition, led by expert sonographers. Low student/tutor ratios (4:1) ensure comprehensive practical tuition in a personalised fashion.

Pre activity

Online material e-mailed to candidates upon enrolment) - 2 hours Each participant receives a login to the AIU online global learning community website prior to attending this workshop, where they have access study modules which contains didactic explanations related to the whole content of the workshop. At the end of each module, the participants have to answer MCQ test. A successful completion is regarded when a score of 8 out of 10 is obtained.

Post-course One-year intranet access where former students can watch video, upload images and receive tailored feedback about their scanning progress.

Learning objective

1.   Identify the parameters of safe application of ultrasound in medical diagnosis

2.   Identify the physical principles, artefacts and the steps for image optimisation while performing ultrasound

3.   Recognise the sonographic appearances of normal and abnormal structures required to answer common clinical questions

4.   Practice "hands on" ultrasound scanning skills required to maximise diagnostic ability in answering relevant clinical questions

5.   Perform basic B-mode assessment of cardiac chambers.

6.   Differentiate normal heart from  major  cardiovascular  pathology,  particularly  in  the critically ill patients

7.   Describe limitations and pitfalls of BELS protocol

8.   Recognize situations when a referral for a second opinion is indicated.
