RCH - Practical Paediatric Program - Food Allergy: Diagnosis And Management

This course is part of a collaboration between ACRRM and the Royal Children's Hospital (RCH) Melbourne that aims to bring selected elements of the RCH's Practical Paediatric Program to rural and remote GP's.

RCH has been providing outstanding care for Victoria's children and their families for over 140 years and are the major specialist paediatric hospital in Victoria and their care extends to children from Tasmania, southern New South Wales and other states around Australia and overseas.

In this course Professor Mimi Tang’s presentation looks at food allergy in general, describing the different types of food allergy; covers how it differs from food intolerance; and then focuses on IgE mediated food allergy including:

  • allergic reactions and anaphylaxis
  • which food types tend to cause IgE mediated food allergy
  • investigation; allergen-specific IgE (sIgE) blood test or skin prick test? The significance of positive sIgE
  • Outcome and management
  • Prevention – infant feeding advice
