This inter-professional team training course:

  • Reinforces the use of a systematic approach to the assessment and management of any patient who may be clinically unstable
  • Provides an opportunity for participants to work as part of a team in a role that reflects what they do in their day-to-day work
  • Provides an opportunity for participants to practice teamwork skills including coordination of resources, leadership and followership, and speaking up for safety

The emergencies presented are representative of  common problems and may include:

  • Cardiovascular
  • Respiratory
  • Neurological
  • Trauma
  • Metabolic
  • Electrolyte abnormalities

Learning objective
  • Employ a systematic approach to assessment and management of any patient who may be clinically unstable.
  • Perform a rapid assessment and initiate early management for:
    • Cardiac Arrest
    • Airway Obstruction
    • Breathing impairment
    • Cardiovascular compromise including hypotension, chest pain or cardiac dysrhythmias
    • Disability: Coma or seizure
    • Electrolyte and metabolic abnormalities


  • Work effectively in a team in roles that reflect the participants’ workplace roles (E.g. team leader, supportive role, airway expert etc.)
  • Provide continuity of care including:
  • Consulting
  • Clinical handover
  • Arranging transport to another ward (or hospital), nursing care and ensuring follow-up

  • Provision of feedback via instructor facilitated debriefings following each scenario, covering technical (clinical) and non-technical (teamwork) points

HNE Simulation Centre courses are delivered by specialist doctors and senior nurses who are trained simulation instructors and clinically active in the specialty areas of anaesthesia, intensive care (adult, paediatric and neonatal) and emergency medicine.

Course evaluation methods include:

  • Immediate oral feedback from participants
  • Anonymised online questionnaire emailed to participants after the course
  • Instructor feedback
