Need for Program

Working in interdisciplinary teams are the norm in modern ever-changing health settings. This means many interdependencies exist. The provision of best care requires a mix of patient desires combined with evolving best evidence and clinical appraisal of the situation. Clearly, this requires teamwork at its best. In order to provide modern quality care it is necessary for nurses to have sufficient team skills - particularly during periods of change - to ensure patient safety and quality are continually delivered. Despite this the ability to engage in good teamwork and to cope with change are too often left to chance leaving big gaps in knowledge and skills. There is an ongoing need for education to assist nurses and other staff to work in teams and learn how to deal with change is.

Purpose of Program

The purpose of this seminar is to assist nurses to work better in teams and to adapt quickly and easily to the changes that occur in modern health workplaces so as to improve patient safety and deliver quality care.

Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of this program it is expected that the participants will be able to:

  • Work with others in a team manner that encourages best communication and least conflict
  • Communicate confidently and assertively in interdisciplinary team meetings
  • Critically appraise and embrace change in a positive manner
  • Collaborate positively with colleagues when changes that improve patient care are implemented

    Rethinking Change - Why You May Be Asked if You Work Well in a Team?

    Ice-breaker session This session will set the scene for the seminar. This will not be a long session but will give you insight into what you can expect for the next two days and also introduce you to others on the course. Discuss:

    • What problems you want solved by attending this seminar?
    • What your expectations are and how you know if they have been met at the conclusion of the course?
    • What particular areas are troubling you that you would like to be addressed.


    Defining Who or What Constitutes a Team

    The use of the word team is bandied about everywhere but often it does not reflect the fact that real teams are functioning. In this session we will tease out some of the inter-dependencies that may exist in teams looking particularly at what is good and what is not so good. Includes:

    • What is the difference between working together as individuals versus working in isolation?
    • How important are common goals to team work?


    Where is Your Team at in its Life Cycle?

    Teams are dynamic by nature, for example, they change as time goes along. Members may leave and new ones arrive, interdisciplinary staff may come and go.

    • What are stages of team development?
    • How does this affect the dynamic of a team?

    Why Bother? - The Purpose of Teams

    Because the notion of teams is so poorly defined, you may think "What is the point" in trying so hard to get this team to work, or even to try to work in this team?. This session will reveal the many answers to this question. Includes:

    • What does non-team work look like?
    • How does working synergistically result in better outcomes?
    • Why is teamwork the solution to many of the problems encountered in the workplace?


    My Team and "I"

    This session reflects on firstly, your unique contribution that you make to your team and secondly, how you perceive your team works. Includes:

    • What role do I normally take in my team?
    • What seems to work well in my team?
    • What would I like to see changed and why?

    1:00pm - Lunch Break and Networking


    Unblocking a Team - How Competition Makes a Difference

    In this lively, after-lunch session you will look at team work from a totally different perspective. This session will introduce the concept of competitiveness and how it influences staff behaviours. You will engage in a fun activity which will help you to reflect on how you interact in teams. You will have an opportunity to elect on:

    • What is blocking behaviour and how does it manifest?
    • What are the consequences of blocking behaviours?
    • Why does blocking often cause conflict?
    • How is conflict both destructive and constructive?

    3:00pm - Afternoon Tea and Coffee


    Who is Really Influencing Your Team - Strategies for Better Team Working

    In this final session of day one we will look at what happens when teams experience conflict and it is either denied, or accepted but not dealt with. Includes:

    • What are the causes of conflict in your teams?
    • How are these conflicts handled?
    • What part do you play in helping process these conflicts?

    In light of what you have learned, what will you now do differently as a team member?

    Change and You — What Works Best?

    Have you ever wondered why we all seem to react to change so differently? In general, it appears most people do not like change and this seems to be for a range of reasons. As there is a lot of change happening, often in only a short amount of time, you may need to learn new and better ways to adapt. This session looks at modern understandings of change and through the use of a series of exercises will assist you to manage change better in the future. Find out:

    • How you personally deal with change
    • What helps or hinders you?
    • What is meant by the 'change curve'?
    • How do organisations cope with change?

    Building Bridges to Enable Change

    Everyone starts off with the same awareness of the need to change. Then you go through a stage of finding information about the proposed change and the implications it will have for you and so on. Compliance and commitment are a crucial part of this change journey. In this session, you will discover some of the reasons why implementing and being part of change can be relatively easy and what actually happens when it starts to get more difficult. This is a very insightful session that will assist all those who find adaptation difficult. Includes:

    • What is the difference between compliance and commitment and why does it matter if it gets the job done?


    Standing Up and Being Heard - Being Assertiveness in Interdisciplinary Teams

    Most people are familiar with assertiveness skills. However, as health care becomes increasingly interdisciplinary it is essential that nurses' are heard when others professionals voices may appear more powerful. 
    When change occurs it is important that nurses, as patient advocates, are in a position to confidently question and, if necessary, challenge the reasons behind change and what is expected of them within the scope of their role. Includes:

    • What is the difference between anger and assertion?
    • How mutual respect is a powerful tool
    • Getting your voice heard and then listened to!

    Embracing Change with, Style and Confidence

    In today's workplace change is a fact of life and so embracing it with confidence and asking for rationales when appropriate is normal. This requires a raft of communication skills that include assertiveness and confidence. Some people like speaking up but for others this can be difficult. Following the previous session you will now engage in some fun activities that will strengthen your skills in embracing change. Includes:

    • How not to take it all on your shoulders
    • Having confidence to ask the right questions
    • Pitching your communication so that it hits the target in a pleasant and confident manner

    3:00pm - Afternoon Tea and Coffee


    Onwards and Upwards - From Little Acorns Great Oak Trees Grow

    In this final session we will start to consider improvement goals that you could make that will change workplace behaviours for the better.

    • Reflect on your personal goals for improvement
    • Reflect on your role in increasing the effectiveness of your team
    • Consider what you will do to view change positively
