RSV Protection for Infants – Nurse Module
The RSV Protection for Infants – Nurse Module is a specialised online learning program designed to equip nurses and related health professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to support families in understanding and preventing respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections in infants. RSV is a major public health challenge, with almost all children infected before the age of two and approximately 12,000 infants admitted to hospital each winter in Australia due to severe RSV-related illness. This course provides a baseline understanding of RSV, its transmission, and its impact on vulnerable populations, particularly infants and children under two years of age.
Participants will gain practical knowledge about the safe storage, preparation, and administration of nirsevimab, a monoclonal antibody recommended for infants at risk of severe RSV disease. The module also explores communication strategies and scenario-based learning, helping nurses engage effectively with parents and caregivers to deliver evidence-based advice and support informed immunisation decisions.
The course is suitable for Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioners (in some jurisdictions). It is endorsed by professional organisations including the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and the Australian College of Midwives (ACM), ensuring its relevance and credibility.
Delivered entirely online through the accessIQ platform, the module is flexible, interactive, and supported by formative assessments that provide immediate feedback. Participants receive a Certificate of Attendance upon completion, which can be used to demonstrate CPD activity. By completing this course, healthcare professionals will be better prepared to integrate RSV prevention strategies into their practice, improve outcomes for infants, and contribute to reducing the burden of RSV-related hospitalisations. This free, accessible program represents a valuable opportunity for nurses to enhance their expertise in paediatric respiratory health and immunisation advocacy.
