Screening and case-finding for dementia in general practice

This education compares and contrasts the roles of population screening and case finding in the diagnosis of dementia. Cognitive assessment tools are outlined and their respective roles and features described. Detail is provided regarding the neuroimaging currently available to assist with the diagnosis of identification of type of dementia. Risk factors for the development of dementia are explored and comorbidities considered.
By completing this learning activity, participants will be able to:
- Discuss the differences between population screening and case finding in dementia in general practice.
- Apply and interpret the assessment tools and neuroimaging.
- Evaluate patients for the risk factors implicated in the development of dementia.
- Ensure patient safety by being aware of and managing the comorbidities that may exist together with dementia.
