This session allows the learner to consider how communication issues, hearing and visual impairments are common and important factors in the assessment of changing clinical situations, where underlying diagnosis may be multi-factorial.

This session was reviewed by Dirk Palet and last updated in July 2018

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe how to investigate and manage a common learning disability (LD) presentation
  • Recognise how the presence of a learning disability, as well as sensory and communication difficulties, can skew the presentation and management of common associated clinical conditions
  • State how the observation of body language, and other strategies, can improve interpersonal communication with people with learning disabilities
  • Recognise that functioning in people with learning disabilities can sometimes be improved by correcting identified hearing and visual impairment

In this session you will follow the example of a patient with learning disabilities (LD) who presents at your surgery. You will see how clinical and non-clinical factors can contribute to their management and treatment.
