Partner notification, when and how?
Session overview
Description
This session will explore the principles and practical application of partner notification when dealing with sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and identifying when partner notification is appropriate.

Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • identify the principles of partner notification when dealing with STIs
  • outline the different methods of partner notification and decide when they are appropriate
  • describe how to form a strategy with the individual as part of the partner notification process
  • list ways to overcome resistance
  • describe the follow-up process

Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should:

  • complete Module 01/Sexual history (260-0004)

Partner notification is an important tool for the prevention of onward transmission of STIs.

Effective partner notification enables the identification and contact of as many people at risk of infection as possible. This then offers them the chance of early diagnosis and treatment.

It is very important that all patients who are diagnosed with STIs are seen by a healthcare professional competent at partner notification, ensuring partner notification takes place and is followed up effectively.
