Scrotal Masses
Session Overview
Description
This session explains the approach of a doctor or enhanced nurse practitioner to scrotal masses, including recognition of urgent surgical conditions and malignancies and exclusion of significant underlying causes. Acute STIs are covered in the next session on epididymitis.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe the normal anatomy of the scrotum
- Explain how to examine the scrotal contents systematically and decide whether a lump is testicular or not
- List when it is appropriate to image the scrotum and refer someone with a scrotal lump to an urology service
- Give the key presenting symptoms and signs of testicular malignancy
- Give the key presenting symptoms and signs of testicular torsion
Scrotal and groin masses commonly present to primary care physicians, sexual health specialists and to urological and general surgical departments.
This session aims to describe normal scrotal anatomy. By highlighting important factors in accurate history taking and in examination findings, it will help you to come to a confident differential diagnosis.
The session will also highlight where urgent referral is required and give guidance regarding appropriate investigation and treatment.
