Session overview
Description
This session will cover the natural history, clinical presentation and management of scabies infection and pediculosis pubis in adults.
Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Discuss the presentation of scabies in adults
- List the range of diagnostic methods for scabies
- Identify treatment regimens for the effective management of scabies
- Describe the common and rare complications of scabies
- Describe the presentation of pediculosis pubis in adults
- Describe the natural history of infection
- Explain the management of pediculosis pubis
Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should:
- Module 1/Sexual History (260-0004)
- Module 1/Male Genital Examination (260-0009)
- Module 1/Female Genital Examination (260-0010)
This session covers the aetiology, clinical presentation and management of Sarcoptes scabiei infection in adults and offers recommendations on treatment regimens (Fig 1).
The health promotion principles needed for the effective management of scabies are addressed.
The session also deals with the manifestations of scabies infection in the severely immunocompromised.
The aetiology, clinical presentation and management of pediculosis pubis (pubic lice) are also covered in this session (Fig 2).
