This session considers the diagnosis and management of asymptomatic patients with syphilis.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe the further investigation and initial management of an asymptomatic patient with positive treponemal serology
- Explain how to exclude Yaws, Pinta and Bejel from a travel and past medical history
- List the range of conditions in which false positive treponemal serology may be found
Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should have completed:
- Module 2/Diagnosing Syphilis (260-0023)
This session concentrates on the fundamentals of positive treponemal serology which covers the following points:
- The management of asymptomatic patients with positive treponemal serology to include necessary clinical examination, confirmatory investigations, and the choice of antibiotic therapy
- The place of partner notification for this group
- The follow up arrangements and any requirements for continued serological testing as well as the management of serofast or serological relapses upon follow-up
