Sterilisation course



This session explores the current methods of female and male sterilisation available in the UK. It looks at the benefits and risks, in particular, focusing on important topics to be included in counselling a person interested in the method. It is useful to have completed the Basic Anatomy and Physiology (403-0101) session prior to commencing this one.

By the end of this session, learners will be able to:
- 3.8.1 List the advantages and disadvantages of sterilisation
- 3.8.2 List methods used for male and female sterilisation
- 3.8.3 Facilitate referral for a person considering sterilisation
Sterilisation is a popular and effective contraceptive method for people seeking to avoid pregnancy long-term.
Ruth qualified as a Dr in 1997 at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne. She has been practicing as a General Practitioner since 2001. She has had additional posts in hospital Genito-Urinary Medicine and in Community Young Person and General Contraceptive Clinics.
