Overview

This brief introductory online course (90 minutes) on Trauma-informed Care (TIC) is designed for a range of professionals who work in General Practice or Community Health settings: General Practitioners, nurses, mental health providers, other allied health providers, medical receptionists and practice managers.

In this course, you will learn about key aspects of TIC, including understanding the impacts of trauma, as well as how to safely talk about and manage trauma disclosure, and simple strategies to teach trauma-impacted individuals to help them deal with their distress.

Course content

  • Understand the principles of trauma-informed care and how they relate to your practice
  • Understand and identify the impact of traumatic experiences, including bushfires, on people’s wellbeing
  • Develop skills for talking to people who have experienced a potentially traumatic event
  • Develop skills for supporting and stabilising strong emotions.

This course has been developed by Phoenix Australia – Centre for Posttraumatic Mental Health, and is supported by funding from the Australian Government under the Mental Health Supports for Bushfire Affected Australians package which aims to help frontline workers support community members and colleagues affected by the 2019 - 2020 Australian bushfires.

Nepean Blue Mountains Primary Health Network has been granted a limited number of places in this course for the local health workforce.

  • This course is for general practitioners, nurses, mental health providers, other allied health providers, medical receptionists, practice managers.
  • Participants must work within the LGAs of either Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury, Lithgow or Penrith.

*Once voucher codes have been activated, participants will have three months to complete the self-paced course.
