Session Overview
Description
This session acquaints the learner with the bony and ligamentous anatomy of the foot and describes the maintenance of the arches of the foot.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Recognise and orientate the bones of the foot
- Identify the attachments of the major ligaments of the foot
- Describe the course and insertions of the tendons of tibialis posterior, flexor hallucis longus and peroneus (fibularis) longus
- Understand the mechanisms by which the medial longitudinal arch of the foot is maintained
Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should complete:
- Sessions on lower leg and ankle
Completion of the first anatomy module relating to the foot will give you an overview of the bony anatomy, the ligamentous constraints and the way in which the tendons of the lower leg serve to support and control the arches of the foot.
This will assist you in understanding how damage or disease to those structures affects the function of the foot.
