Session Overview
Description
This session looks at the importance of the surgical trainee to be able to recognize, formulate a treatment plan and select surgical intervention for acute endocrine crises.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to list the main causes, describe the signs and symptoms, and formulate a treatment plan for;

  • Hypercalcaemia
  • Post-operative hypocalcaemia
  • Thyroid storm
  • Acute adrenal insufficiency
  • Phaechromocytoma crisis

Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should (complete):

  • Understand the principles of calcium homeostasis, thyroid and adrenal function

Although endocrine emergencies are usually treated by medical teams, it is vital for the surgical trainee to be able to recognize and initiate treatment as most of these entities are relevant to surgical practice and can occur either as post-operative complications or as results of conditions requiring surgical intervention.
