Trauma and Orthopaedics: Osteoarthritis Hip
Session Overview
Description
This session aims to provide an introduction to the pathological process of osteoarthritis, along with its effect on and the treatment options around the hip joint.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe normal cartilage structure and function
- Describe the processes by which osteoarthritis (OA) occurs
- Describe the anatomy and radiographic landmarks of the hip joint
- Recognise clinical and radiographic features of hip OA
- Explain the treatment modalities for hip OA
- Describe two common surgical approaches to the hip joint
Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should have:
- A basic knowledge of normal cartilage and joint anatomy, particularly the hip
OA of the hip is one of the most common orthopaedic presentations and accounts for a significant healthcare expenditure, with almost 100 000 total hip replacements performed in the UK in 2016 [1](read details regarding the reference).
An understanding of how OA occurs, along with how it can be diagnosed and treated, is important in the management of these patients.
Due to the complexity and frequency of hip replacement operations, this is a large session consisting of five sections:
- Normal cartilage structure and function
- Osteoarthritis
- The normal hip and hip osteoarthritis
- Recognising clinical and radiographic features of hip OA
- OA hip management
- Surgical approaches to the hip
