Trauma and Orthopaedics: Osteoarthritis Knee
Session Overview
Description
This session introduces osteoarthritis of the knee, along with its effects and the treatment options available.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe the anatomy and radiographic landmarks of the knee joint
  • Recognise clinical and radiographic features of knee osteoarthritis
  • Explain the treatment modalities for knee osteoarthritis
  • Describe a common surgical approach to the knee

Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should have:

  • A basic knowledge of normal cartilage and anatomy of the knee
  • Completed the preceding session: T&O: Osteoarthritis Hip (100-2030) which includes a section of the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee is one of the most common orthopaedic presentations and accounts for a significant healthcare expenditure, with almost 100 000 knee replacements performed in the UK in 2015 [1](read details regarding the reference).

An understanding of how OA occurs, along with how it can be diagnosed and treated, is important in the management of these patients.

Please refer to T&O: Osteoarthritis Hip (100-2030) before commencing this session.
