Syndromes and Pathology associated with Learning Disabilities course for GPs
This session describes the common syndromes associated with learning disabilities and their associated medical problems. Further resources to help with other conditions and the principle of diagnostic overshadowing are also discussed.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- describe the five common conditions associated with learning disabilities, their associated characteristics and medical problems
- access other resources to help you with other conditions
- define and avoid diagnostic overshadowing.
The session will introduce the common characteristics and commonly occurring medical problems associated with each of these syndromes and highlight useful resources. Case scenarios based on these conditions will also be discussed.
Dr. Tom Howseman has developed a particular interest in learning disabilities since becoming the GP responsible for delivering the primary care of four homes looking after patients with complex learning disabilities.
Tom was on the RCGP Learning Disabilities Group, and a representative of the RCGP during the development of the Getting It Right project, hosted by MENCAP.
