By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Explain why school absence matters (including the size of the problem and long- term impact)
  • Explain the legal framework for school attendance and when children and young people may legitimately be out of school
  • Outline school, family and individual reasons why children and young people may not be in school
  • Describe the services available to support the child out of school and the approaches known to foster better school engagement
  • Identify what actions you can take to assess, manage and safeguard the child out of school

This session uses self assessments that help you check what you have learnt. You do not have to use them and your answers are not seen by anyone else.
