THE COMPREHENSIVE MANAGEMENT OF EDEMA

  • : Online
Overview

This course is comprised of the lectures below.

  • Part I: Anatomy & Physiology of the Lymphatic System, Stages of Lymphedema and Patient Cases

Reviews the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system and the pathophysiology of edema formation. Primary and secondary lymphedema are defined and its stages are described. The clinical characteristics of lymphedema are emphasized with the use of patient cases.

  • Part II: Differential Diagnosis and Evaluation of Peripheral Edema

Reviews the physiology of edema formation and includes a comprehensive evaluation for an individual with peripheral edema. A systems review and differential diagnosis process is discussed and patient cases are presented to assist the participant in developing a differential diagnosis list. Physical therapy objective assessment techniques and potential medical diagnostic tests are presented to assist the therapist in determining if physical therapy is appropriate for an individual with peripheral edema, or if referral to another health care professional is needed.

  • Part III: Treatment of Edema: Compression Therapies

Utilizing the ICF model as the foundation for developing a plan of care, a comprehensive treatment approach for peripheral edema is presented. The management of peripheral edema utilizes an evidence-based approach, which includes the physiological rationale and contraindications for utilization of compression therapy, including compression bandages, compression garments and compression pumps. The advantages and disadvantages for choosing each intervention are presented, based on the etiology of the edema.

  • Part IV: Treatment of Edema: Manual Lymph Drainage Mobilizations and Treatment of Lymphatic Pathways

This part continues Dr. Perdomo's discussion of an evidence-based approach for the treatment of edema with an emphasis on manual lymphatic drainage mobilizations, skin hygiene, therapeutic exercise, joint mobilizations and a self-management home program. Understanding the normal lymph drainage pathways is emphasized in order to assist the participant in developing treatment pathways for patients with both healthy and compromised lymphatic systems. Several patient cases are presented to summarize the key concepts for evaluation, differential diagnosis and treatment of peripheral edema
