The School Health Team course
This session will explore the key aspects of a 21st century school health service, describing the multidisciplinary team involved in achieving optimum health for all school children aged between 5 and 12 years.
It will contextualise the development of the school health team and its transition to modern day public health practice.
Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Identify key health and non-health players in the context of a brief history of the school health service and school nursing
- Describe the benefits of working together and networking for optimum outcomes for children
- Identify the role, and how to develop a partnership with primary care
- Describe the benefits and importance of good child health record keeping and communication
- Balance priority of communication with awareness of confidentiality

Jane Wright is a senior lecturer and course leader for Specialist Community Public Health Nursing at Buckinghamshire New University. She has a background in adult nursing and school nursing in Buckinghamshire. Jane has written a number of books and articles about school nursing practice, is on the editorial board of the British Journal of School Nursing and has been involved with the Department of Health School nurse Implementation Plan.
