Overview

Trachoma is an infectious disease of the eye caused by certain strains of the bacteria Chlamydia trachomatis. It is the leading cause of preventable infectious blindness in the world. Australia is the only developed country that has endemic rates (5% or more) of active trachoma.

The focus of this module is the identification and assessment of trachoma.

At the end of this module participants will be able to:

  • Explain the difference between active and late phases of trachoma.
  • Describe the public health issues associated with trachoma.
  • Discuss how to undertake a trachoma assessment.
  • List the five grades of trachoma in the WHO simplified grading system.
