Understanding the Physiology of the Immune System

The immune system has evolved over millions of years as our body’s defense system against pathologic invaders. This learning program is designed to introduce you to the basic functions of the immune system. The program begins with an overview of the types of immune responses: innate immunity as well as antibody-mediated and cell-mediated acquired immunity. You will then learn about ways in which the body can change and shape the immune response as well as the autoimmune responses that can occur when the system for recognizing pathogens malfunctions. Finally you will learn about the specific mechanisms the immune system uses to recognize and destroy tumor cells.
