Why Sleep is the Game-Changer for Mental Health in Children with Autism, presentation by Nicole J. Rinehart, Director, Neurodevelopment Program and Professor of Clinical Psychology

Early career research submissions extended 
If you’re a student, advanced trainee, or early career researcher (up to five years post-PhD conferral), you can apply to be part of the Victorian clinical and sleep science showcase. This session will highlight the latest cutting-edge sleep research by our local rising stars. Abstract submissions are open and will close Tuesday, 15 April. Authors selected to present will be notified by shortly thereafter. Prizes will be awarded for the best speaker.

You must be a current ASA member to apply. Please email your talk title to Georgina Rawson, along with your current institutional affiliation, co-authors and whether you’re a student, advanced trainee or post-doctoral researcher.

Registration will close at 1pm on Thursday 8 May. To register you will need to log in with your member details or create an account on this website if you're not a member.

Speaker bio's

Nicole is a Professor of Clinical Psychology, School of Psychological Sciences at Monash University, with a distinguished career that includes being named Australian College of Clinical Psychologists Rising Star and receiving the Queens Trust for Young Australians Award. She leads pioneering research to improve developmental and mental health outcomes for children with neurodevelopmental conditions. Nicole founded the award-winning AllPlayTMprogram in 2014, recognized by the Australian Financial Review -Community impact awards.  She served as Director of Medical Research on the Autism Victoria Board (2014 to 2023) and has been a consultant Clinical Psychologist at the Melbourne Children’s Clinic for over 20 years.

 

A/Prof Ching Li Chai-Coetzer is a respiratory and sleep physician and clinical lead of the Sleep Health Service at Flinders Medical Centre and Associate Professor in Sleep Medicine at Flinders University. Her research expertise is in sleep medicine clinical trials, with a focus on limited-channel sleep study testing, community-based health service delivery models for OSA, and optimising OSA treatment. She previously developed and validated the OSA50 screening tool for identification of patients at high risk for OSA in general practice and conducted the world’s first RCT of a simplified, primary care-led management model for OSA involving GPs and practice nurses. A/Prof Chai-Coetzer was a co-investigator on the NMHRC Primary Care CRE “National Centre for Sleep Health Services Research” (2018 to 2022) to improve the knowledge and involvement of primary healthcare professionals in sleep disorders management. She served on the ASA Board of Directors and was Chair of the ASA Education Committee from 2017 to 2021.
