Managing challenging and violent behaviour is an integral part of the workload of an emergency department. It is important to be familiar with the myriad of causes of challenging behaviour and to ensure the safety of patients and staff.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Summarise up-to-date information regarding factors that may be indicative of potential violence and aggression in the emergency department
  • Illustrate potential approaches that may prevent violence and aggression within the emergency department
  • Recognise the skills required for de-escalation of violent or aggressive situations in the emergency department
  • Describe how to respond to an escalating emergency situation to ensure the safety of those present

Tony Bleetman,
Tony is a consultant in Emergency Medicine at the Heart of England NHS trust

Tony Bleetman is a consultant in emergency medicine at the Heart of England NHS Trust. Tony is Clinical Director HEMS for West Midlands Ambulance Service. He developed an interest in staff safety and use of force issues, which led on from his PhD in Police Officer safety. He has worked with NHS staff on developing and assessing medical risks of safety training packages in the mental and acute health sector. Tony sits on the College of Emergency Medicine’s Police group. He is a medical advisor to the National Policing Improvement Agency, Association of Chief Police Officers and the Home Office. He sat on the NICE clinical guidelines group that delivered clinical guideline 25, management of the acutely disturbed/psychiatric patient.
