Overview

The second module in this three part series, covers how to manage severe violence or aggressive behaviours in the healthcare workplace, providing participants with tools that may be utilised to minimise the risk of harm associated with severe behavioural disturbance.

There are three modules in this course:

  • Violence in the healthcare workplace: Predicting, preventing, and managing violence
  • Violence in the healthcare workplace: Managing acute severe behavioural disturbances
  • Violence in the healthcare workplace: Post violent incident response

This course is linked to the Australian National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards, Standard Five: Comprehensive Care. It is specifically relevant to Action 5.35 and 5.36: Minimising restrictive practices: restraint and seclusion.

Learning Objective

At the end of this module participants will be able to:

  • Define acute severe behavioural disturbance and identify common causes of severe agitation in healthcare.
  • Describe how a code black may be used to respond to patients with acute severe behavioural disturbances.
  • List the range of interventions that may be used to manage patients with acute severe behavioural disturbances.
  • Describe the different types of restrictive practices including observation, seclusion, and physical, mechanical, and pharmacological restraint
