Vaccine hesitancy is discussed in this webinar.

Vaccine hesitancy

Why is this important?

Achieving high uptake of a safe and effective vaccine to control the spread of SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) is a public health priority. The WHO identified vaccine hesitancy as one of the top ten global health threats in 2019. However, vaccine hesitancy, a delay in acceptance or refusal of vaccines despite availability of vaccination services, may hinder the uptake of the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. To address vaccine hesitancy, pharmacists must understand and recognise it to help achieve community coverage and community immunity.

What is your role as a pharmacist?

Initially, pharmacists will have a role in supporting the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine uptake in population groups most at risk of COVID-19 e.g. people with high-risk medical conditions and older adults. This support will expand to include the broader population as the vaccination campaign progresses.

To communicate the effectiveness of the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine and address vaccine hesitancy, pharmacists must appreciate the diversity in social, behavioural, cultural and health practices of population groups as well as their understanding of and perceptions towards COVID-19. Pharmacists may have to address questions about the safety of the vaccine and rigour of its development, the need for the vaccine, and the possibility of side effects.

What's in it for you?

Learn how to be a vaccination advocate using a consistent evidence-based message about the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine.

Learning Objectives

After attending this webinar, pharmacists should be able to:

  • Describe vaccine hesitancy
  • Recognise the barriers to vaccination including a lack of understanding about the need for, and safety of, the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine
  • Demonstrate communication skills that provide a clear and consistent message about the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine
  • Develop ‘frequently-asked-questions’ information addressing the most common concerns about the SARS-CoV-2 vaccines that is tailored to the needs of your community.
