WHAT CAN PHYSIOTHERAPISTS DO ABOUT PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF OBESITY – INDIVIDUAL AND SOCIETAL APPROACHES

Presenter: Martin J

This presentation will outline the problem of overweight and obesity

in Australia, covering trends in adults and children, the impacts on

health and on quality of life. It will detail the importance of prevention

for physiotherapists utilising techniques such as brief interventions;

strategies to raise the importance of maintaining a healthy body weight;

and relevant resources. More broadly, population based approaches such

as mass media education campaigns will be covered. An outline of what

elements need to be addressed at a societal level to reduce overweight

and obesity will be explored. It is very important to create an environment

where the healthy choice becomes the easy choice; otherwise it is very

unlikely that individuals will be able to successfully change their behaviour

in the long-term. Physiotherapists can play an influential role in supporting

environmental change through involvement in policy discussions via peak

bodies; more direct individual engagement; and leadership within the

community. A number of advocacy strategies will be discussed, including

using the media to influence change.
