142751 - Introduction to Emergency Medicine Ultrasound (POCUS) 5-day Course

Speciality Classification
General Practice ( GP ) / Family Medicine
Location
Online
Delivery

Duration
31.5 hours

Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) has become an expected component of the emergency medicine toolkit. Both ACEM and ASUM expect competency with E-FAST, Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA), Basic Echo in Life Support (BELS) and ultrasound guided vascular access. POCUS is a real time, non-invasive diagnostic and therapeutic tool which involves both theoretical and practical domains. It also requires a well-founded grounding in basic scanning techniques which lays the foundation for safe and effective ultrasound practice. This course was designed for emergency medicine and general physicians who aim to incorporate bedside ultrasound assessment in their practice. There is an emphasis on practical aspects led by expert sonographers and clinicians. A low student to tutor ratio (4:1) ensures reasonable hands-on ultrasound practice on a diverse volunteer population, which increases attendance’s confidence of providing safe and focused bedside ultrasound assessment.

Relevance to General Practice

General practitioners play an essential role regarding primary diagnosis and management plan. A good example is that the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners has recently requested the department of Health and Aging for a detail review regarding of funding arrangements for diagnosis imaging services [1]. Additionally, general practitioners performing real-time point of care ultrasound study has been supported by numerous trials when equipment, documentation and appropriate training are available [3-6]. The Curriculum for Australian General Practice, which defines the learning pathways in general practice, outlines that appropriate procedures should be undertaken, documented and aftercare with informed consent to maintain quality care, under the core Domain 2 - Applied professional Knowledge and skilled [2]. The aim of this course is to explore ultrasound techniques focusing on general practitioners who want to expand their skills in acutely ill patients.

Learning outcomes
  • Identify the physical principles, artefacts and the steps for image optimisation while performing ultrasound in general practice
  • Identify the physical principles, artefacts and the steps for image optimisation while performing ultrasound in general practice
  • Practice "hands on" ultrasound scanning skills required to maximise diagnostic ability in answering relevant clinical questions
  • Recognise the sonographic appearances of normal and abnormal structures required to answer common clinical questions when performing ultrasound studies.
