This activity provides an opportunity to discuss the different types of meningococcal vaccines and how to appropriately help patients to make informed immunisation choices.

Although meningococcal disease is uncommon, it is very serious. The disease can progress very quickly and can lead to death or permanent disability. Although the majority of victims will recover fully, up to 10 per cent of infected people die, even if they are treated with the right antibiotics. In cases of meningococcal disease an average of one in 10 people die, two in 10 people will be left with a disability, and 10 out of 10 will be hospitalised. 
While immunisations are decided by health, age, lifestyle and occupation, there are the national and state programs for meningococcal vaccines. 
GPs are uniquely placed to form an early social relationship with the child and their family. This includes managing parental concerns in a way that enhances the parents’ understanding, self-confidence and capacity to manage. The provision of preventive care is a key element of the Australian health system.
