The Cultural Learning for Primary Health Care Providers will explore life prior to and since settlement, the diversity within Aboriginal culture and how health professionals can work within a culturally safe practice through interactive sessions delivered in a non judgmental manner that encourages open participation by all.

Relevance to General Practice

Australia's first peoples, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, experience high levels of disadvantage, health outcomes similar to those of less developed countries along with high infant mortality, rates of suicide, incarceration and adverse mental health conditions. The health of Australia's first peoples is this country's most pressing and important health priority. Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people are among the most disadvantaged indigenous peoples in the developed world.

  • Outline Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander life prior to colonisation including customs, beliefs and daily activities
  • Describe how past and current government legislation, policies and priorities impacts on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, culture and communities
  • Outline current Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander specific health priorities and standards including PIP IHI, NHSQ Standards.
  • Apply learnings into strategies and methods to engage appropriately with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people within health care context.
