83695 - Neonatal Resuscitation Program

Speciality Classification
General Practice ( GP ) / Family Medicine
Face to face
8 hours

This program is an 8 hour interactive session including lectures, MCQ tests to reinforce learning , skills training and assessment.
The goal is to update all those who attend births and to train to a standardised systematic approach of resuscitation of the newborn following the American Academy of Paediatrics and the American Heart Association Neonatal Resuscitation Program.
This program emphasises multi displinary team work. It is essential that medicial and nursing staff work together in a team approach to improve outcomes of the newborn baby.

Relevance to General Practice

The International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) acknowledges that 10% of all births require some intervention. Of the total number of births 1% will require a full resuscitation including ventilation, chest compressions, medications and volume expansion. In Western Australia this equates to approximately 300 babies. KEMH recommends a systematic based approach to neonatal resuscitation based on the AAP and AHA NRP.
The importance of this course is that it has a multi disciplinary focus where both the medical and nursing staff can focus on skill, a team approach and communication. Research has shown that many General Practitioners do not experience managing a compromised infant at birth on a regular basis therefore frequent training is essential to maintain skills and knowledge.
This course is designed to provide consistent information, standards and education for the GP to be able to manage a compromised infant at the time of birth as well as in the neonatal period.

Learning outcomes
  • Discuss and demonstrate the importance of working within a team environment whilst performing neonatal resuscitation
  • Discuss the possible antecedents of neonatal compromise and be able to recognise a compromised infant at the time of birth
  • Understands the physiology of transition
  • Discuss and demonstrate the use of resuscitation equipment available on the neonatal resuscitaaire in cluding the self inflating bag and the neopuff
  • Discuss the indications of, dose and method of drugs and volume used in neonatal resuscitation
  • Delivery
