This session uses case studies to describe the appropriate primary care management of allergies in children. It will outline the rise in allergy rates, the main allergic disorders and their appropriate treatment.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Identify the prevalence, presentation and primary care management of allergic conditions affecting infants and children
  • Describe appropriate use of investigations and referral of allergic conditions
  • Recognise children at high risk of serious allergic reactions
  • Explain how the attitudes and understanding of patients, families and health professionals all impact the management of allergic conditions
  • Discuss the principles of prevention of allergy in high and low risk infants

Allergic disease has become more common in recent decades in the UK. Approximately 50% of children will be diagnosed with an allergic condition and the number of people suffering from serious allergies has also risen.

Malin Sullivan,

Malin Sullivan graduated from Edinburgh University in 2000 after which she went on to general practice vocational training in Fife.

She became a member of the RCGP in 2004 at the end of her Registrar year and then went on to become a partner in Kinghorn practice, Fife 6 months later.

Dr Sullivan has represented the Fife Local Medical Committee and General Practice Subcommittee since 2005 at a local and national level. Special interests include medical politics and child health.
