The Bachelor of Public Health and Health Promotion (Honours) at Deakin University is a one-year advanced program designed to build on undergraduate studies in health and prepare graduates for careers in the global health industry. This honours year provides a unique opportunity to conduct in-depth research on a topic of choice, combining theory, practical skills, and supervised project work.

Students will sharpen their expertise by undertaking a major independent research project, supported by coursework in research methods and skills development. The program emphasizes critical thinking, problem-solving, and ethical research practice. Learners will gain a deep understanding of philosophies and principles of research, while also developing practical skills in data management, communication, and reporting.

The honours year is highly flexible, offered both at the Burwood (Melbourne) campus and online, with compulsory online sessions via Blackboard Collaborate. Students are expected to commit around 35 hours per week to study, including supervised research and independent work. Work-integrated learning opportunities may include research internships, data collection through interviews, focus groups, or surveys, and collaboration with industry supervisors.

Career outcomes are diverse, with graduates prepared for roles such as health promotion officer, health policy developer, community development coordinator, program evaluator, and health researcher. The program also serves as a pathway to masters or doctoral research, making it ideal for those seeking academic or research careers.

Entry requires completion of a relevant bachelor’s degree with a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of at least 65 in third-year units. English language proficiency is also required (IELTS 6.5 overall, no band less than 6.0).

Graduates are eligible for membership with professional bodies such as the Public Health Association of Australia (PHAA) and the Australian Health Promotion Association (AHPA). With global demand for public health professionals rising due to chronic disease, ageing populations, and lifestyle-related health challenges, this honours program equips students with the advanced skills and research experience needed to make a meaningful impact in healthcare systems worldwide.
