This session uses case studies to describe common breathing problems found in neonates and infants. It covers croup, bronchiolitis and viral induced wheeze. The appropriate primary care and management for these conditions is discussed. This session was reviewed by Matthew Castleden and last updated on 22/2/2013.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Recognise a seriously unwell child with breathing problems who needs immediate treatment and referral
  • Distinguish from the history and examination whether the child has croup, bronchiolitis or viral induced wheeze
  • Identify appropriate medication for each child with croup, bronchiolitis or viral induced wheeze
  • Describe the importance of taking the child in context, of both the disease progression, and the social circumstances
  • Explain to parents clearly when a child should be brought for further help

Breathing problems in infants and neonates are very common reasons for a child presenting to primary care. Indeed, croup and bronchiolitis are leading causes of respiratory distress in children.
