Learning objectivesBy the end of this session you will be able to:
- describe the steps involved in developing an Advance Decision to Refuse Treatment (ADRT)
- discuss how the sensitive use of communication skills can assist in developing an ADRT
- discuss patients' key information requirements prior to developing an advance statement
Before commencing this session, we suggest you complete the following:

- Cultural and spiritual considerations in ACP (215-0102)
- Advance decisions to refuse treatment: principles (215-0105)
- Mental Capacity Act: aims and principles (215-0107)
- Mental Capacity Act in practice (215-0108)
Professionals involved in supporting the end-of-life care needs of patients will, from time to time, be required to help patients formulate an advance decision to refuse treatement (ADRT).
This advance statement needs to be developed on established best practice guidance to ensure the statement is valid, appropriate and best serves the interests of the patient.
This session focuses on how to help patients who wish to develop an ADRT. Emphasis is placed on the professional blending the sensitive use of communication skills with current legislation and best practice guidance.
