Invasive Ventilation 2: Advanced Modes, Trouble Shooting, Rescue Therapy (incl ECMO)
Session Overview
Description
This session describes the advanced management of hypoxaemia and hypercapnia in mechanically ventilated patients.
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- List the important causes of hypoxaemia and hypercapnia during positive pressure ventilation
- Describe the management of hypoxaemia during mechanical ventilation
- Describe the management of refractory hypoxaemia in severe Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome
- Describe the management of hypercapnia during mechanical ventilation
Before commencing this session you should complete session:
- Invasive Ventilation 1: Indications, Initial Settings, Basic Modes, Complications (001-0273)
Mechanical ventilation is the most commonly applied organ support used in the ICU.
This session reviews the management of a deterioration in arterial blood gases during mechanical ventilation, hypoxaemia and hypercapnia. It also looks at ventilator strategies available for managing refractory hypoxaemia in Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS).

- This session will introduce pharmacokinetics and modelling. The simple one-compartment model will be described and reasons presented as to why such a model rarely describes drug behaviour.
