This session will introduce you to quality improvement in healthcare, in particular the role of the clinician, the discipline of improvement, the people and leadership skills involved, and the main approaches and tools. This session supports the development of leadership in clinical settings.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Define the term quality improvement
  • Explain your role as a clinician involved in quality improvement to others
  • List the elements that make up a quality improvement approach, in particular the discipline of improvement
  • Identify the key tools and approaches for each of the elements in the discipline of improvement
  • Demonstrate your contribution to leadership in your clinical setting by identifying areas for improvement in your own service

Clare Price-Dowd,
Specialist Associate Knowledge & Learning, NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement

Clare has worked in the NHS for the past 27 years. Initially trained as a nurse in Nottingham, she has had roles in both management and education including spending three years as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Derby, and developing an education programme for The British Forces Health Care Services in Germany, and the national First Contact care programme for the former NHSU.

Since 2005 Clare has been employed as a Specialist Associate in Knowledge & Learning for the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement. In this time she has developed e-learning for capability building in service improvement and managed the introduction of service improvement into the pre-registration education of healthcare professionals at 50 English universities.

Kirsten Armit,
Faculty Manager Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management

Kirsten Armit has several years’ experience in project and programme management of national and international leadership development programmes in the UK and Australia. Her recent experience includes managing the establishment of the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management, managing the Emerging Clinical Leaders Program for Queensland Health, Australia and as Senior Project Manager for the Enhancing Engagement in Medical Leadership project, led by the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement and the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges. Kirsten has published a number of articles in national and international journals and other publications, as well as e-learning materials relating to medical leadership and management.

Kirsten completed the Australian College of Health Service Executives Management Development Programme in 2004 and holds a Bachelor of Health Science (Health Services Management), Certificate IV in Business (Frontline Management), Prince II Practitioner qualification and Foundation IV in Coaching Skills. Kirsten is a member of the Australasian College of Health Service Managers, Institute for Healthcare Management, fellow of the Chartered Management Institute and associate of the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management.

Claire Lemer,
Paediatric Consultant

Claire Lemer is a Consultant in Paediatrics and Service Transformation the Evelina Children’s Hospital, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.

She graduated from UCL Medical School in 2000. Her paediatric training has been undertaken in London. She has completed an MBA, MPH and MD. Her main interests are Medical Management and Quality Improvement.
