Master of Medicine (Sexual and Reproductive Health)

Overview

In response to COVID-19, the University of Sydney has reviewed the availability of courses to be delivered remotely for students commencing their studies in Semester 1, 2021.

This course will be available to study remotely for students commencing in Semester 1, 2021. Please note that some units of study that are not essential to completing the degree may not be available to be studied remotely.

Note: The University intends to offer as many units of study as possible in a remote as well as face-to-face learning method of delivery in Semester 1, 2021 and subject to ongoing border closures and public health orders impacting attendance on campus, in Semester 2, 2021. However, some units of study and courses require students to study in-person at the relevant University of Sydney campus/es and host locations for placements and will not be available remotely. 

About this course

Study sexual and reproductive health at Sydney and develop a nuanced understanding of the challenges of sexual and reproductive health in Australia and internationally.

100% online course delivery

In this course there are four specialisations on offer. If you choose a public health or a generalist 'no speciality' pathway all units of study will be completely online. 

If you choose HIV and STIs or Pyschosexual therapy and reproductive health and fertility, these specialisations are also mostly online, however they do require a 2 week intensive face-to-face session on campus. 

Both options are extremely flexible and will allow you to tailor your study schedule around your lifestyle. 

Why study this course? 

Globally, the challenges of sexual and reproductive health including HIV/STIs, infertility, and unintended pregnancy continue to be a significant public health issue. Challenges to sexual function and wellbeing also impact on the health of individuals. Comprehensive prevention and treatment of sexual and reproductive health issues requires a thorough understanding of the psychosocial contexts in which they occur as well as the biological and diagnostic aspects of sexual and reproductive health and wellbeing.

Designed by clinical and academic experts, the program enables students to address these challenges head-on through flexible units that deliver maximum professional relevance and choice. 

Students will have opportunities to:

• develop high levels of knowledge and appropriate skills in dealing with the psychosocial contexts, effective prevention strategies and management techniques for HIV, STIs, sexual and reproductive health issues
• learn to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams on the practical challenges faced by professionals working in these areas
• acquire skills recognised as essential components of the professional training in HIV and STIs, sexology/sexual health counselling/psychosexual therapy and reproductive health and fertility
• learn to critically evaluate relevant research and contribute to the growing body of evidence-based, effective interventions.

What you'll study 

The Master of Medicine (Sexual and Reproductive Health) requires the completion of 48 credit points of units of study including:

• 12 credit points of compulsory units of study;
• 24 credit points of stream specific units of study; and
• 12 credit points of stream specific or general elective units of study.

All units of study engage the current evidence base and encourage critical engagement with the evidence. To facilitate the best educational and professional outcomes from their studies, each student is advised to discuss their unit of study choices with a pathway coordinator before the commencement of each semester.

All students enrolled in the master's degree complete CEPI5100 Introduction to Clinical Epidemiology.
