Description
This session will look at the relevance of common neurological disorders to the delivery of dental care by the dental practitioner.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Recognise patients with neurologically based disorders
- Discuss the pathology of important neurological disorders
- Recognise and manage complications of dental health which can arise in important neurological conditions
Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should have completed e-Den session:
- Human Diseases and Medical and Dental Emergencies/Medical Topics and Dentistry/Neurological Disorders I (141-0061)
The range of neurological problems is extensive. The following are of some importance in the working life of the dental professional and will be discussed in this session:
- Stroke and transient ischaemic attack (TIA)
- Intra-cranial bleeding
- Epilepsy
- Parkinson’s disease
- Multiple sclerosis
- Meningitis
- Dementia and prion disease
- Brain tumours
- Motor neurone disease
- Post-infective polyneuropathy (Guillain-Barré syndrome)
- Vitamin deficiencies
