This session aims to help you understand how to take a history and provide services to young people who may have been victims of sexual assault.

 

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Examine the definitions and legal framework of sexual assault in the adolescent age group
  • Describe the epidemiology of sexual assault in the adolescent age group
  • Discuss how to manage an adolescent presenting with a history of acute or historic sexual assault
  • Identify the services available for sexually assaulted adolescents

 

In this session we will briefly cover the epidemiology of acute and chronic sexual assault, consider the sexual offences legal framework and why adolescents are particularly vulnerable. Management of an adolescent presenting with an allegation of sexual assault will be described and the services offered by Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs) will be outlined.

  • Session - AH_09_001 - Sexual Behaviour in Adolescence (401-0038)
  • Module 03 Legal Framework (Consent, Confidentiality, Ethics and Safeguarding)

Consultant Paediatrician

Dr Andrea Goddard is a consultant paediatrician at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington and clinical lead for child protection at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

She is also Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College, London and Designated Doctor for Child Protection for NHS Westminster and Lead Paediatrician for the three London Sexual Assault Referral Centres.

Her interest in social paediatrics and child maltreatment is complemented by an interest in adolescent health and child rights.
