Acute and Chronic Non-gonococcal Urethritis: Specialist Management
Session Overview
Description
This session covers a more specialist approach to the management of non-gonococcal urethritis where chlamydia and gonococcal tests are negative or first-line therapy has failed.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Investigate chlamydia-negative non-gonococcal urethritis
  • Describe the pathogenesis of urethritis, including non-infective causes
  • Give appropriate information to patients who are diagnosed with non-gonococcal urethritis
  • Prescribe antibiotics appropriately for recurrent urethritis
  • Manage chronic healthcare-seeking behaviour, avoid dependency and increase patient self-efficacy

Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should complete the following:

  • Session - 02_07 Diagnosing Trichomoniasis (260-0024)
  • Session - 03_01 Male Urethritis: Diagnosis and Management (260-0034)
  • Session - 03_05 Chlamydia Trachomatis: Natural History and Management (260-0038)
  • Session - 03_09 Prostatitis and Male Pelvic Pain (260-0042)
  • Session - 03_10 Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (260-0043)

This session covers the aetiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of chlamydia-negative non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU) and persistent or recurrent urethritis, following treatment of NGU.

A case study will be used throughout this session to help you to think critically and apply your knowledge to a typical presentation of NGU. You will call upon your existing knowledge and consider the initial presentation of the case study before you are given more information.
