Session Overview
Description
This session provides an overview of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), describing presentation and how it differs from other pelvic and gynaecological conditions. It explains how to investigate PID in patients, what tests are appropriate and how to identify when patients require further referral. The treatment and management options are discussed.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe bacterial causes of PID, and prevalence in various communities
- Identify key presenting features of pelvic inflammatory disease and how to distinguish this clinically from other pelvic and gynaecological conditions
- List clinical investigations and laboratory tests to perform in suspected PID
- Recognise when a patient requires referral for specialist in-patient management
- Select appropriate initial antimicrobial therapy giving reasons for therapy choice
- Give appropriate information to patients diagnosed with PID regarding treatment, partner notification and sexual abstinence, and deal with questions about fertility concerns
