An overview of common reasons why children may not be attending school and the role of the health professional in identifying, managing and supporting children out of school.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Explain why school absence matters (including the size of the problem and long- term impact)
  • Explain the legal framework for school attendance and when children and young people may legitimately be out of school
  • Outline school, family and individual reasons why children and young people may not be in school
  • Describe the services available to support the child out of school and the approaches known to foster better school engagement
  • Identify what actions you can take to assess, manage and safeguard the child out of school

This session uses self assessments that help you check what you have learnt. You do not have to use them and your answers are not seen by anyone else.

Mandy Rose,
Consultant community paediatrician

Mandy Rose Is a Consultant Community Paediatrician and the lead for education for the Oxford University Hospitals Trust. She is based at the Children’s Hospital in Oxford.

Mandy trained in Paediatrics and general practice in the UK and gained her MPH from Johns Hopkins University USA. Prior to her current appointment, she worked extensively with multilateral and bilateral organisations in maternal and child public health in low resource settings. Mandy’s current interests are quality improvement, school health and child public health. As a mother of children with ADHD and SpLDs, she has a special interest in these areas also.

Pauline Nicklin,
Service manager integrated children services

Pauline qualified as a General Registered Nurse in 1980 at the Royal United Hospital, Bath. She gained a variety of experience including qualifications in Orthopaedics and Midwifery. Moving to Oxfordshire Pauline continued to practice as a Midwife before moving into Family Planning and then School Nursing in 1999. She has worked in school nursing ever since and qualified as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse in 2002 and a Community Practice Teacher a year later. Having been the Operational Manager and Professional Lead for school nursing within Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust, Pauline recently moved into the post of Service Manager for integrated children’s services and the service lead for school nursing.
