The Supplementary Feeds in Special Circumstances course is part of the Breastfeeding for Health Professionals program. Upon completion the participant should be able to: define when supplementary feeding is necessary and appropriate apply different methods of supplementary feeding appropriate to individual circumstances give appropriate advice and support to mother’s according to individual circumstances differentiate between the needs of a term and preterm baby demonstrate the principles required in supporting the choice not to breastfeed, and advise mothers on the safe preparation, handling and storage of powdered infant formula and alternative feeding methods.

 

Target Audience

Any clinical or non-clinical employee of a health institution who is required to have an understanding of breastfeeding practice. This can include non-clinical staff (such as cleaners, cooks etc) through to nurses, midwives, doctors and lactation consultants.

 

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course the participant should be able to: 

  • define when supplementary feeding is necessary and appropriate 
  • apply different methods of supplementary feeding appropriate to individual circumstances 
  • give appropriate advice and support to mother's according to individual circumstances
