This session addresses how change is introduced and implemented. It recognises the impact of change on the continuity of service provision, as well as on other areas of service delivery and on individuals. This session supports the development of leadership in clinical settings.

Sumona Chaudhury,
Dr Sumona Chaudhury Doctoral Candidate in Global Health Epidemiology at Harvard

During the Chief Medical Officer’s Clinical Advisor Scheme she was appointed as an advisor to Professor Bernard Crump, then Chief Executive of the NHS Institute of Innovation and Improvement and to the World Health Organization, African Partnerships for Patient Safety (2009-10). Sumona trained in Internal Medicine at the University of Nottingham (2004 -7) and Ophthalmology in the West Midlands (2008-11). She gained her MPH in Global Health at Harvard (2007-8).

During her time on the scheme, she partnered with the Institute of Healthcare Improvement in Boston (USA) delivering a global educational network in leadership, patient safety and quality improvement of healthcare to the medical schools of England, culminating in a national conference at University College London. Previously she led, developed and delivered programs in an array of settings across Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia and was selected for a highly competitive opportunity at Harvard involving skill building for the development of scalable and sustainable social enterprises in low-income setttings; "Project Antares".

Sumona is currently working towards her Doctorate in Global Health Epidemiology at Harvard University, where she is able to bring her diverse experiences in Medicine, Innovation, Policy and Global Health to bear in development of her research interests and continued commitment to social enterprise. She is a research assistant for the Program for Human Rights in Development Group and is the recipient of the CV Starr Scholarship in support of her studies at Harvard.

Penny Lewis,
Leadership development facilitator and coach

Penny has a varied background combining a clinical profession with higher education, research, and service general management. Recently she has been working with the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement and the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges on the Enhancing Engagement in Medical Leadership project, including contributing to establishing the Medical Leadership Competency Framework, and specifically taking a lead for post graduate training. Penny is the Clinical Lead for the e-learning programme LeAD, both for medical leadership (through the AoMRC) and for clinical leadership (through the NHS Leadership Academy, and previously the National Leadership Council).

Posts in the NHS have included: Policy Lead in a Strategic Health Authority for leadership and diversity; Service General Manager for quality and education in an NHS Trust; and research supervisor and module leader for the multi-disciplinary MSc in Healthcare at the University of Exeter. Penny was Associate Lecturer in the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry Graduate School, specifically teaching on M.Ed. in Clinical Education, and Professional Skills for specialist registrars. Now working on a freelance basis, Penny has been offering training, facilitation and coaching to the public sector, especially senior staff and teams in healthcare.
