This session explains the Person-centred Care domain of the RCGP curriculum. It explores the concepts that underpin person-centred care through a consultation with a patient. This session was reviewed by Suchita Shah and last updated in October 2014.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe how to adopt a patient-centred approach in dealing with patients and their problems, in the context of the patient’s circumstances
  • Describe how to use the consultation to bring about an effective doctor-patient relationship, with respect for the patient’s autonomy
  • Describe how to communicate, to set priorities and act in partnership
  • Describe how to provide long term continuity of care

In reality, learning outcomes from any or all of the domains will feature in a clinical problem. This is explained in the first session in this module, entitled ‘Introduction and Overview’.
