Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Identify how to come to a shared decision with your patient
  • Describe the tension between clinical priorities and your patient's wishes
  • Describe how to empower your patient

This session looks at different ways of approaching your patients about the issues around a problem, offering solutions, and informing them about the merits and downsides of each solution.

Antony Chuter is Chair of the Patient Partnership Group (PPG) of the Royal College of General Practitioners. He lives with a long-term condition, which he self manages in partnership with health professionals.

Antony has been involved in the Transforming Chronic Care Programme in Surrey and Sussex, in the Department of Health’s Urgent Care programme, as a Patient Quality Adviser to the Health Foundation’s ’Leadership Fellows Awards’, as a judge in the 2007 and 2008 ’Best of Health Awards’ for the South East Coast Strategic Health Authority and he is also a founder member of the SHA’s Peoples Engagement and Development Network.

Antony has a broad knowledge of the health service and the opportunities within for further development and improvement. He has a passion for our National Health Service and is devoted to working with other service users in partnership with health professionals, he feels if you want to change something for the better, get involved. He is especially interested in issues around health inequalities.
