This session is the first in a series of sessions about travel advice for patients and provides a broad overview of the issues GPs must consider when advising patients before they travel.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Perform an individualised risk assessment and communicate the risks to would-be travellers
  • Explain the concepts of risk avoidance, limitation and elimination with reference to travel health
  • Advise travellers when vaccination is mandatory

There are around 70 million visits abroad each year from the UK and as a general practitioner (GP) you will inevitably be asked for advice by would-be travellers.

Entry Requirements / Prerequisites

Before commencing this session you should:

  • Have a basic undergraduate knowledge of travel medicine
  • Have a basic understanding of the concepts of risk assessment and risk limitation

Nick Jones,
GP and Trainer

Nick works in general practice in Midsomer Norton, Somerset.

He developed an interest in travel-related disease whilst on a year-long sabbatical in 1995 during which he contracted dengue fever. He went on to write the Rough Guide to Travel Health and has subsequently written numerous articles on travel health for both the medical and lay press.

Nick is a content author for the e-LfH programme.
