This session provides an opportunity to confirm your understanding of various possible approaches to supporting patient self care. This is achieved through evaluation of other health professionals’ practice and should aid the learner in determining what self care approaches might be used to maximum effect in a given circumstance.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Assess the self care requirements of a person with a LTC
  • Agree a self care plan with the individual and/or carer
  • Address challenges to effective encouragement and support of self care

This session explores the key principles and practices used by healthcare professionals when supporting those with a LTC to self care.

Patricia Wilkie,
Social Scientist

Dr. Wilkie is a social scientist who has spent much of her working life researching in academic departments of medicine. She has also worked as a volunteer with national patient organisations and the medical royal colleges establishing patient groups within the colleges. She was the first lay member on the AOMRC and set up their patient lay group. Patricia has been a lay member of many DH committees including the CSM and a lay affiliate at the GMC. She contributes to academic journals and is an assistant editor of Quality in Primary Care. She is currently president of N.A.P.P. Patricia Wilkie, 2008.
